Why I Built TideWatch: Watching Billions in Grants Fall Through the Cracks

The grant world is obsessed with winning awards. Nobody is talking about what happens next.

I spent years working in the federal space. Not on the policy side, not writing legislation, but in the trenches where grants actually get executed. And what I saw over and over again was the same pattern. Organizations would fight tooth and nail to win a grant. They would spend weeks, sometimes months, putting together the perfect application. Then they would get the award letter and celebrate.

And that is exactly where things would start to fall apart.

The Real Problem Nobody Talks About

Everyone in the grant world is focused on the front end. Finding grants. Writing proposals. Getting the award. There are dozens of tools out there to help with that part of the process. But once you win the grant, you are largely on your own.

I watched organizations with millions of dollars in federal funding try to track compliance requirements in spreadsheets. I saw program managers juggling five or six grants at once, each with different reporting cycles, different compliance rules, and different deadlines. I watched good people at good organizations miss deadlines, submit incomplete reports, and ultimately put their funding at risk. Not because they did not care, but because the system was working against them.

The numbers tell the story. About 67% of grant managers say compliance is their number one challenge. Roughly $28 billion in federal grants gets returned every year because of execution failures. And grant administrators are spending 15 or more hours a week just on manual tracking and paperwork. That is time they could be spending on the actual mission their grant was designed to support.

Spreadsheets Are Not a Strategy

Here is what grant execution looks like at most organizations today. You have a shared drive somewhere with folders full of documents. You have a spreadsheet that someone built three years ago to track deadlines. You have email chains going back months with your program officer. And you have a team of people who are spending a huge chunk of their time just trying to keep track of where things stand.

Every quarter, reporting season rolls around and it is all hands on deck. People are pulling data from five different systems, trying to reconcile numbers, digging through email to find the latest version of a document. It is stressful, it is error prone, and it is completely unnecessary in 2026.

I kept asking myself the same question. Why is there not a better way to do this?

What We Built and Why

TideWatch is the answer to that question. We built a platform specifically for what happens after you win the grant. The post-award phase. The execution phase. The part that actually determines whether a grant succeeds or fails.

At its core, TideWatch is a command center for grant execution. You can see all of your grants in one place. You can track your budget in real time and know exactly where every dollar is going. You can monitor compliance requirements and get alerts before deadlines sneak up on you. You can manage milestones and tasks and know at a glance which grants are on track and which ones need attention.

But the feature I am most excited about is something we call the Win Story Generator. It uses AI to take your grant data and turn it into a compelling narrative about the impact your organization is making. Instead of spending days putting together a dry compliance report, you can generate a story that shows your funders exactly what their investment accomplished. That is the kind of report that does not just satisfy a requirement. It helps you secure your next round of funding.

Built by People Who Understand the Problem

We did not build TideWatch in a vacuum. This platform comes from years of watching the grant execution process up close and understanding where it breaks down. We know what an audit looks like. We know what it feels like to scramble for a document at the last minute. We know the anxiety of wondering whether you missed a compliance requirement that could jeopardize your entire award.

That experience is baked into every feature we built. The compliance engine is not a generic checklist tool. It understands federal Uniform Grant Guidance, 2 CFR Part 200, and the specific requirements that trip organizations up. The budget tracking is not just a ledger. It shows you burn rate, variance, and flags potential issues before they become findings.

Who This Is For

We built TideWatch for the organizations that are doing important work but struggling with the administrative burden that comes with it. State and local governments running infrastructure projects. Nonprofits managing community programs. Educational institutions juggling research grants. If you are managing $10 million or more in grants and you are still relying on spreadsheets and shared drives, we built this for you.

You should not have to choose between doing good work and maintaining good compliance. TideWatch lets you do both.

What Comes Next

We are just getting started. The platform is live and we are working with our first group of organizations to make sure TideWatch delivers real value from day one. We are listening to feedback, improving the product every week, and building out features that our users are asking for.

If you are a grant manager or program director and any of what I described sounds familiar, I would love to show you what TideWatch can do. You can request a demo at tidewatchai.com or just reach out to me directly. I am always happy to talk about grant execution with people who care about getting it right.

The grant management world has been underserved for too long. It is time for that to change.
